The day I turned 14 I brought my working permit from the county judge to Piggly Wiggly to apply for my first job. I worked there on and off for 5 years, became stock manager for the last 2 and ran the entire store except for the cashiers and meat market. It was very valuable work experience and I actually supported a family on the minimum wage which at the time was twice as high as it is today (2015). |

| Gail and I had a welcome home party for a friend who just came back from the jungles of Vietnam. He obviously had serious PTSD, his wife (in the background) committed suicide a few years after this picture was taken. Thier life together had been very hard. |

Buford Johnson, Charlie Collins and Mike Stangeland at the old Carter house, Bagdad, Florida, late 1970's. Charlie was playing the local county auditorium with his Grand Ole Opry buddy Bashful Brother Oswald. After the show I asked Charlie to come to our house for an all night jam session with the local musicians and he accepted. I asked him what he would like for refreshment and he said he'd like to drink Crown Royal so I stopped and bought him a bottle.
It was one of the greatest experiences of my musical life up till that point, trading fiddle tunes with Charlie Collins all night long and sipping Crown Royal. |
